Grampie has a birthday

November 11th, 2007

Yesterday my father had a birthday, so all the kids and grandkids invaded Grammie and Grampie’s, laden with chili, bread, coffee, and way too many sweets. I learned something about him I never knew - he’d never made smores before! Sparkle and Sprinkle put together little smore birthday gifts for everyone, and Grampie showed himself to be a quick study. (And my brother proved himself to be the pyromaniac. Still.) All in all we had a great chili feed, and some absolutely amazing dairy-free cheesecake that my brother made. I’m not gonna lie to you - I was very, VERY leery about even trying any. But father made me, and I’m glad he did! It was incredible. Honestly. Some of the best cheesecake I’ve had in ages, and I know I’m going to have to get the recipe!

Here’s grampie roasting the marshmallow:

Grampie blowing out the flaming marshmallow:

Assembling the smore:

My brother relishing the flame:

And Fidget, relishing Grammie’s pumpkin bread:

And the grand unveiling of the pseudo-cheesecake:

And I have to mention that if you’re trying to blow out the flaming marshmallow and accidentally blow out your candle instead, it doesn’t work to try to re-light the candle with the marshmallow . . . Now it’s off to church, home for leftover chili, and an afternoon editing pictures. And evening, and night, and however long it takes to get them completed for the sweet family who has been so patient.

Mini Smores Kits: one unscented tea light, 2 matches, two toothpicks, 10 miniature marshmallows, 10 semi-sweet chocolate chips, 20 square of Golden Graham cereal. (Many thanks to the creativity of the Thompson kids in Wisconsin for this idea!!!)

What are you using for graham crackers? What a fun way to make mini S’mores!

The s’mores were excellent. Never realilzed what I was missing all this time. As I explained though - the problem is the marshmallows. As soon as I get one cooked just nicely I eat it. Never get to build anything with it.

It was a terrific evening - thank you all.

Ahh.. the smores. I remember the day that we did that- my siblings and I… the day when the power went out, and we were all bored. :)
